Life

Martinian of White Lake (Belozersk), born Michael in 1370 in the village of Berezniko near the Cyrilov monastery, was a Russian monastic of the fifteenth century and a disciple of Saint Cyril of White Lake.

At the age of thirteen he left his parents and went secretly to Saint Cyril, under whom he studied reading and writing and, with his elder's blessing, occupied himself with the copying of books. He was later ordained deacon and then hieromonk.

After the death of Saint Cyril in 1427 he founded a monastic community on an island in Lake Vozha, served as igumen (abbot) of the Therapon (Ferapontov) monastery, and for a period governed the monastery of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. He died at the age of eighty-five, and his relics were uncovered in 1514.

By a flood of tears you made the desert fertile,
and your longing for God brought forth fruits in abundance.
By the radiance of miracles you illumined the whole universe!
O our holy father Martinian, pray to Christ our God to save our souls!

Monastic Life and Foundations

Having come to Saint Cyril of White Lake as a boy of thirteen, Martinian was formed in the monastic discipline of his elder, learning reading and writing and devoting himself, with Cyril's blessing, to the copying of books. He was in time ordained deacon and afterward hieromonk.

After the death of Saint Cyril in 1427, Martinian withdrew to a deserted island in Lake Vozha, where he gathered a community, constructed a church dedicated to the Transfiguration, and established a rule for the brethren. He subsequently became igumen of the Therapon (Ferapontov) monastery, where he improved the condition of the house. He returned to Therapon in 1455 and died there at the age of eighty-five, having endured severe illness in his last years.

Governance of the Trinity Lavra and Public Role

At the request of the Great Prince, Martinian accepted the governance of the monastery of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, the Trinity Lavra (Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra), serving as its superior from 1447. In this office he provided spiritual support to Great Prince Basil during a period of political conflict and was remembered as an advocate of truth and justice.

His tenure raised the standing of the houses he led. The fame of the Ferapontov monastery spread under his guidance, and the institution was afterward protected and favored by members of the family of Ivan III, indicating the elevated status his leadership had secured.

Relics & Shrines

Martinian's relics were uncovered in the year 1514. This event is commemorated annually on October 7, distinct from his principal feast on January 12.
