Fortification and Defense
During Irenarchus's abbacy the Solovki Monastery held considerable significance in the defense of northern Russia against the Swedes and the Danes. Under his direction a stone wall with turrets was constructed, deep ditches were dug, and stones were laid out around the monastery; according to one account the fortified monastery could contain a thousand troops.
While attentive to these external dangers, Irenarchus was equally concerned to fortify the community inwardly and spiritually.
