Historical Context
Bessarion belongs to the long line of Bulgarian and Balkan new martyrs who suffered under Ottoman rule. English-language references place his repose in the 17th century, with one listing giving the year 1670; the surviving accounts agree only that he was martyred by the Turks near the end of that century. The scarcity of documented detail is typical of locally venerated martyrs of the Ottoman period, whose memory was carried by regional devotion long before written lives or formal glorification.
