Life

Onesimus of the Kiev Near Caves was a monk of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (the Kiev Caves Monastery) whose relics rest in the Near Caves of Saint Anthony. He is venerated as a Venerable (monastic) saint, though no detailed account of his life survives.

The available sources place him in the 12th to 13th century and record little beyond his monastic vocation and the resting place of his relics. He is commemorated together with Saint Helladius of the Kiev Near Caves, of whom likewise no biographical information is preserved.

TroparionTone 8

By a flood of tears you made the desert fertile,
and your longing for God brought forth fruits in abundance.
By the radiance of miracles you illumined the whole universe!
O our holy father Onesimus, pray to Christ our God to save our souls!

Life and Veneration

No biographical account of Onesimus survives. The sources record only that he was a monk who labored at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and that his relics are interred in the Near Caves of Saint Anthony. On this basis he is placed in the 12th to 13th century.

The general commemoration of the venerable fathers of the Near Caves dates to 1670, when the caves were restored following earthquake damage and the relics of a number of ancient ascetics were uncovered. Onesimus is numbered among the venerable monks of the Near Caves honored in this collective commemoration.
