Life

Theophilus and Jacob (also rendered James) were two monastics of the Rus' north who together founded a wilderness monastery on the River Omutch (Omuch) in the Pskov diocese. Before their independent work, both trained in ascetic life on the island of Konevets under Saint Arsenius.

In 1395 or 1396 they crossed the Omutch River and established a hermitage dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, in Demyansk county roughly 65 versts from the city of Porkhov. The monastery was formally established around 1412 and bore Theophilus's name in his honor.

Theophilus is remembered as the founder and the more highly revered of the pair, while Jacob is credited with putting the monastery in order. They are venerated as wonderworkers and commemorated together on October 21, with a secondary commemoration on December 29.

Monastic Formation and Foundation

Both saints began their monastic life at the Konevets (Konev) monastery, living under the guidance of Saint Arsenius before beginning their own independent work.

Around 1395–1396, in the Pskov diocese at the River Omutch not far from Porkhov, they founded a wilderness monastery in honor of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos. Sources place the hermitage in Demyansk county, approximately 65 versts from Porkhov, with the community formally established about 1412.

According to the tradition, Theophilus was the founder and was highly revered, while Elder Jacob is remembered as the one who set the monastery in order. The monastery took Theophilus's name in his honor.

Repose and Relics

Theophilus reposed on December 29, 1412, and was buried in the wooden church of the Dormition; the sources note that the two saints fell asleep in the Lord about the year 1412. Jacob's date of death and place of burial remain unknown.

Their relics were transferred to the church when the parish there was founded in 1764. They are venerated as wonderworkers, and a secondary commemoration falls on the Third Sunday of Pentecost, within the Synaxis of the Saints of Novgorod, Saint Petersburg, and Ladoga.
