Historical Context
In the early sixth century the hermit Barsanuphius settled in the hilly region of Thabatha near Gaza. The monastery of Seridos stood nearby and became instrumental in supporting the recluse and the monastic community that gathered around him. Seridos served as its abbot and as the mediator between Barsanuphius, who remained in strict seclusion, and those who sought his counsel.
Because Seridos did not know Coptic, he recorded Barsanuphius's answers in Greek, making the abbot the indispensable link between the Great Old Man and the outside world. The founding of the monastery is associated with the reign of the Emperor Justin I (518–527).
