Birinus of Dorchester

A Frankish bishop consecrated at Genoa and sent by Pope Honorius to evangelize the West Saxons, he landed in Wessex in 634 and baptized King Cynegils, becoming the first Bishop of Dorchester-on-Thames. Called the Apostle of Wessex, he founded churches across the region until his repose in 649/650; his relics were later translated to Winchester.
