Overview

Protopresbyter John Meyendorff was born on February 17, 1926, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, into the Russian emigration. He was educated in France, completing his theological studies at the St Sergius Institute and advanced studies at the Sorbonne.

He joined the faculty of St Vladimir's Seminary, where he taught church history and patristics, edited major Orthodox publications, and served as dean from 1984 until shortly before his death. His scholarship on St Gregory Palamas and Byzantine theology became foundational for English-speaking Orthodox theological education.

He reposed in Montreal, Canada, on July 22, 1992.
